When to Consider Adenoid and Tonsil Surgery

When to Consider Adenoid and Tonsil Surgery

Enlarged adenoid tissue and recurrent tonsillitis may lead to sleep apnoea, temporary hearing loss and frequent respiratory infections. Here is how we qualify patients for surgery.

Typical symptoms

  • chronic snoring or breathing pauses during sleep
  • mouth breathing and persistent nasal discharge
  • recurrent middle-ear infections or effusions
  • speech difficulties related to conductive hearing loss

Qualification pathway

During the consultation we perform nasal endoscopy, assess the palatine tonsils and order hearing tests. If needed we refer the child for sleep studies or anaesthesia assessment. Based on the findings we recommend the optimal procedure – adenoidectomy, tonsillotomy, adenotonsillotomy or ventilation tubes.

Surgery and recovery

Procedures are carried out under general anaesthesia on the Interhem operating block by our paediatric ENT surgeons and an experienced anaesthetic team. We recommend overnight observation to ensure comfort and safety.

Recovery usually takes 10–14 days. For the first week we suggest a soft diet, limited physical activity and follow-up visits. If you notice bleeding, high fever or severe pain, contact us immediately – we are available by phone and email.
