Preparing Your Child for a Hearing Test
Hearing tests are painless, but a moment of concentration is essential. Here are the tips we share with parents before visits to our audiology lab.
Choose the right time
Book an appointment when your child is rested – morning hours work best because the nervous system has not been overloaded with stimuli yet.
Reduce loud stimuli the day before
Avoid headphones, loud cartoons or noisy toys 12–24 hours before the test. This helps stabilise hearing thresholds and makes interpretation easier.
Ensure physical comfort
Check that the ear canals are clear of wax. If your child has a cold or infection, call reception – it may be better to reschedule so that we obtain reliable results.
Explain the procedure
Tell your child that the exam involves listening to sounds and pressing a button or stacking blocks. For play audiometry you can bring a favourite toy – we are happy to incorporate it.
Bring medical records
Take referrals, previous audiograms, the health booklet and a list of medications. With complete documentation the audiologist and ENT doctor can plan treatment without delay.
Our entire team – ENT specialists, audiologists and speech therapists – is prepared to support children and parents at every step of the diagnostic process.
